KAKEN category to Web of Science Category Mapping 2015, in Japanese  (http://www.mext.go.jp/a_menu/shinkou/hojyo/__icsFiles/afieldfile/2015/08/19/1242617_002.pdf). In English, click here to download..

Scheme Scope

KAKEN category definitions are based on a program from Japan called the Kakenhi Program (Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research). Kakenhi (http://www.jsps.go.jp/english/e-grants/index.html) provides competitive funds for the development of scientific research, from basic to applied research in all fields (ranging across the humanities, the social sciences, and the natural sciences). The grants provide financial support for creative and pioneering research projects that will become the foundation of social development. Projects are selected using a peer-review screening process.

Submissions to Kakenhi are made in approximately 300 categories, which are organized hierarchically into 4 levels. The 2007 version has 66 categories in level 3 and ten categories in level 2. Each of these two levels has had its categories mapped to Web of Science subject areas.

Scheme Type

Category-to-category mapping where KAKEN categories are mapped to Web of Science subject areas. (Web of Science subject areas current as of December 2014.) A single Web of Science subject area can be assigned multiple KAKEN categories, and a single KAKEN category can be assigned multiple Web of Science subject areas.

Method

This mapping is based on a collaborative study by Japan’s National Institution of Informatics (NII) and Thomson Reuters (http://www.nii.ac.jp/userimg/press_20140509e.pdf).

The study used the grants database operated by NII (https://kaken.nii.ac.jp/en/) and the Web of Science Core Collection (WoS CC) database. It used a bottom up approach focusing on journal articles from Kakenhi grants that were also indexed in Web of Science. The articles have KAKEN categories already assigned in the NII database. And they have Web of Science research areas already assigned in WoS CC. The KAKEN categories were matched with the Web of Science research areas by means of the shared articles, using i-Linkage and support vector machines. These matches were then manually vetted.

The mapping of Web of Science subject areas to KAKEN categories must be reviewed periodically because Web of Science subject areas and KAKEN categories may change from one year to the next.
