Global Comparisons Data Update

Global Comparisons now includes Web of Science documents published 1981-2013.

HONG KONG/MACAU

Previously, articles that were attributed to either Hong Kong or Macau were indexed to China Mainland. We have now disaggregated Hong Kong and Macau from China Mainland and papers are now being indexed properly.

A paper from an institution in the China Mainland, Hong Kong, and Macau region is written with international collaboration if it has at least two different countries/territories in its address field, excluding Hong Kong and Macau.  For instance, if a paper contains two addresses, one from Macau and the other from China Mainland, the publication is not considered to be international.

NORHTERN IRELAND/IRELAND

Previously, institutions that were part of Northern Ireland were attributed to Ireland. Now, Northern Ireland and Ireland are treated as 2 separate entities. The overall International Collaborations counts for United Kingdom will reflect these changes.

Global Comparisons Data Update

An update to Global Comparisons has been produced, which resolves the following reported issues:

  • Egerton University (Kenya) had previously been listed as a South African institution.
  • RAJAEI CARDIO MED RES CTR (Iran) had previously been listed as an Israeli institution.
  • UK: 1994 Group was dissolved in November 2013. It has been removed from the product.
  • For the FAPESP (Brazil) category scheme, the category ‘1 Mathematical and Earth Sciences’ has been renamed to ‘1 Mathematics, Physical, and Earth Sciences’. Additionally, the category 9 Interdisciplinary has been amended to be comprised only of documents published in the Web of Science category Multidisciplinary Sciences. Sub-categories 9.1-9.9 have been removed.
  • Data for Brazilian states in National Comparisons for the ESI subject area were lower than expected and has now been resolved.
  • International collaboration data for all country totals in Institutional Comparisons were lower than expected and has now been resolved.
  • The subject area mapping for ANVUR (Italy) has been revised to account for some changes to the scheme.

Changes to Institution and/or Country Counts

Because of Web of Science and unification changes, there may be marginal changes to institution and/or country counts. There exist the following known issues in the data:

  • The counts for Trinidad & Tobago appear to be lower than expected.
  • The definition of Brazil states in National Comparisons appears to count certain addresses for more than one Brazilian state, inflating some of the counts.

Country Unification and Aggregation Changes

Based on user feedback and to bring greater consistency to the treatment of countries that change names or geographic borders, we have updated the following aggregations in Global Comparisons:

Aggregation

Description

GERMANY (FED REP GER)

Current aggregation for GERMANY is replaced with GERMANY (FED REP GER) to show published output of historic West Germany and current unified Germany.

GERMANY (GER DEM REP)

New aggregation for GERMANY (GER DEM REP) was introduced to accurately represent published output of historic East Germany.

USSR

New aggregation for USSR was introduced to accurately represent published output of historic USSR.

ASEAN

New aggregation, ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations), was introduced.

BRIC

New aggregation, BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China), was introduced.

FRANCE INC OVERSEAS DEPT

New aggregation includes the French overseas departments for which documents can be attributed. The individual departments themselves can also be selected in the data.

Two New Subject Area Schemes

The 2012 Global Comparisons update introduces two new classification schemes, bringing the total of supported schemes to nine.

UK 2014 REF Units of Assessment

This is a Web of Science-to-UoA category mapping.

All Web of Science categories active in 2012 have been included in the mapping except “MULTIDISCIPLINARY SCIENCES;” this is consistent with the UoA 2008 mapping.

The mapping was produced using the mapping for the Global Comparisons category scheme UoA 2008 and this document, published on the REF2014 website. Of the thirty-six (36) UoAs, data for thirty-five (35) have been calculated; this is consistent with the approach for the UoA 2008 data. (For the UoA 2008 scheme, for reasons of under-representation in publication history or overlap issues, categories not included at all in Global Comparisons are 5 - Other Laboratory Based Clinical Subjects and 8 - Primary Care and Other Community Based Clinical Subjects.  For the UoA 2014 scheme, only 15 - General Engineering has been excluded due to potential ambiguity and overlap.)

More information about the UK 2014 REF UoA

ANVUR Category Scheme

The ANVUR category scheme corresponds to the official academic disciplines list for Italian Universities Research and Teaching (http://www.cun.it/comunicazione/academic-fields-and-disciplines-list.aspx).

The ANVUR category scheme is organized around fourteen (14) broad categories; however, in some disciplines, more specific research fields are taken into account. Not all of the 14 category codes are represented in the final mapping. More specifically, the following Italian Universities codes are not included in the mapping:

Area 10 – Antiquities, Philology, literate studies, art history; Area 12 – Law, Area 14 – Political and social sciences

The mapping exercise was the result of a cooperative effort between ANVUR and Thomson Reuters and is foundational for a bibliometric analysis to be carried by ANVUR in 2013. The study is required to develop indicators of international standing in research in the Italian scientific fields across which ANVUR assesses the quality of university research. The study is conducted in the framework of the ANVUR Evaluation of Research Quality exercise (VQR 2004-2010).

New Web of Science Areas and Their Impact

In 2012 two new Web of Science subject areas were introduced: LOGIC and AUDIOLOGY & SPEECH LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY. This necessitated changes to the mappings of subject areas in other schemes to Web of Science subject areas. These changes are as follows:

Revised ESI Subject Area Mappings

The journal mapping (application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.spreadsheetml.sheet, 1.6 MB, info) used in production of Global Comparisons for the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) subject area scheme has been reviewed and revised this year to reflect changes in journal-to-subject area assignment. Counts for national and institutional entities using the ESI scheme will likely be different after the most recent data update. On the whole, they are lower.

Revised Methodology for Reclassification of Papers from Multidisciplinary Journals

The methodology followed to reclassify papers from multidisciplinary journals was changed in 2012. See Reclassification of Papers from Multidisciplinary Journals for a detailed explanation of the current methodology.

New Production Process

This year we implemented a new method of processing Web of Science data to produce baseline metrics as well as publication and citation counts in Global Comparisons. Changes to the methodologies relating to assigning multidisciplinary papers, changes to journal mapping of ESI subject areas and a move from counting publications and citations based on database year to publication year may all result in small changes of counts in this edition of GC to the previous editions.

January 2013

Global Comparisons Data Update

On 24 January we corrected some address unifications in Global Comparisons data. These updates resulted in changes to publication and citation counts for the following institutions and countries:

Institutional Comparisons

  • Monash University (Unification corrected to include Monash Health Centre)
  • As a result, the Australia Group of 8 aggregation was updated to reflect Monash corrections. No other changes were made to data for institutions in the aggregation.
  • Pontific Cathol Univ Valparaiso, Chile (Unification corrected to exclude Pontific Cathol Univ Chile)

Redesigned Institutional Comparisons Report

Institutional Comparisons tables have been redesigned to present collaboration data more clearly and to offer more sorting options. Specifically:

  • The default display now shows values calculated from all documents in the dataset, filtered by the report selection criteria. All documents include documents with and without international collaboration.
  • More sort options enable you to evaluate and compare institutions by a single metric (such as Cites per Document) and in the context of international collaboration.

  • Institutional Comparison reports now enable you to evaluate the extent of international collaboration in particular subject areas or in all subject areas.
  • Corporate entities have been added to Institutional Comparison reports. Now you can compare and evaluate the research performance of corporate entities such as Merck, Microsoft and Samsung.
