Article counts and citation data for Essential Science Indicators are derived from 11,855 journals indexed in Web of Science (Science Citation Index Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index only) over a 10-year period.

Each journal is assigned to one of 22 research fields. In ESI, a journal can be assigned to only one field. The Multidisciplinary field contains journals  Journals such as Science and Nature are categorized as multidisciplinary since they publish research in many different fields. As a result, and this categorization should be taken into account when analyzing the field ranking of an individual scientist, institution, or country/territory.papers are in these multidisciplinary are assigned to a field based on the representation of the citing journals and cited journals. For example, if the majority of citations to a paper published in Science come from neuroscience journals and the majority of cited references in the paper are to neuroscience journals, the paper is then categorized as neuroscience. 

Journal List

The master journal list comprises 11,855 all journals covered for Essential Science Indicators up to June 30October 31, 2013, which is the third fifth bimonthly period of 2013. Journals are listed alphabetically within each of the 22 fields covered by the database. Where available, journal ISSN's ISSNs have been supplied. Part of the bimonthly updates to the product include updating The journal list is updated bimonthly
