How do I view and rank journals within a subject category?

The Next Generation of Journal Citation Reports on InCites allows you to easily view and rank journals within a given subject category. By default, you will start your work on the Journals By Rank page, which is where we will begin this tutorial.

Selecting a Subject Category

Our default view is all journals ranked by Journal Impact Factor. Since we want to see only those journals categorized within a specific research field, we will choose a subject area by clicking Select Categories in the filter pane on the left-hand side of the screen.

  1. Click Select Categories.
  2. Check the desired category for which you wish to see a list of associated journals. You may choose one or several categories.
  3. Close out of the Select Category window.
  4. Once you have chosen your desired subject category, you can choose from any of the other filters available on the page to further refine your analysis. Here we will forgo using additional filters and click Submit.
  5. Our results table updates with those journals categorized as Computer Science, Information Systems. Initial ranking is by Journal Impact Factor.

Customize Indicators

You can customize those indicators you wish to see in the ranked list by selecting Customize Indicators. From the pop-up window that appears, choose those indicators that provide the information you need by checking the boxes for each and clicking Save. The list will update to reflect those preferences.

Saving your work

If you wish to save your work, you can add journals to a new or existing list. To read more about adding journals to a list, please read here.
