Access Denied

An access denied is recorded when a user is denied access because 1) the maximum number of simultaneous logons has been reached (formerly, a turnaway) or 2) a content item is not licensed. Each type of access denied is counted separately in Web of Science usage reporting.

Add Journals to List

Number of times users 1) clicked the link Add Journals to New or Existing List and then 2) clicked the Add button in the pop-up window. Both actions together count as one Add Journals to List action.

Alert

An alert automatically searches the latest update of a database and then sends the results to a user by e-mail or via RSS. There are three types of alerts:

  • A table of contents alert sends the table of contents from the most recent issue of a journal.
  • A citation alerts notifies a user whenever an article has been cited by a new article.
  • A search alert automatically sends the results of a saved search history.

All Databases

All Databases refers to a search of data aggregated from all databases in a Web of Science™ subscription. It is not the same as a multi-product report.

Average Length

The average length (duration) of a session. This measure is included in Web of Science portal: Database Report 2 Custom Summary Reports for accounts that have a specified number of maximum users.

Average Use

Average (arithmetic mean) of the numbers in one column in a usage report table.

BA

Abbreviation for Biological Abstracts®.

BCI

Abbreviation for BIOSIS Citation IndexSM.

BIOSIS

Abbreviation for BIOSIS Previews®.

BKCI

Abbreviation for Book Citation Index. BKCI - S is the science edition. BKCI - SSH is the social sciences and humanities edition.

CAB

Abbreviation for CABI: CAB Abstracts® and Global Health®.

Captures

Number of Capture clicks in the Internet Explorer and Mozilla plug-in for EndNote online

CCC

Abbreviation for Current Contents Connect®.

CCR

Abbreviation for Current Chemical Reactions.

Citation Alert

A citation alert notifies you when a new record has been added to Web of Science™ Core Collection that cites a specified document.

Citation Event

A citation event is an action that uses the citation data in Web of Science Core Collection. A citation event is recorded when a user clicks one of the following buttons or links:

  • Search on the Cited Reference Selection page
  • Lookup on the Cited Reference Lookup page
  • Related Records on the Full Record page
  • Times Cited on the Full Record page
  • Cited References on the Full Record page
  • Citation Report on the Summary page

In Web of Science Core Collection, certain citation events count twice, once as a citation event and once as a query. For example, a cited reference search counts as a citation event and as a query.

Citation Report

A citation report provides aggregate citation statistics for a set of search results in Web of Science Core Collection.

Citing Article Links

Number of URLs to citing articles in Web of Science Core Collection returned by Article Match Retrieval Service.

Compare Journals

Number of times users 1) click the Compare Selected Journals link and then 2) click the Submit button once the comparison criteria have been set. Both actions count together as a single Compare Journals action.

CPCI

Abbreviation for Conference Proceedings Citation Index. CPCI-S is the Science edition. CPCI-SSH is the Social Sciences and Humanities edition.

CWYW

Abbreviation for Cite While You Write™.

CWYW Format Bibliography

Number of Cite While You Write Plug-ins Format Bibliography clicks (EndNote online).

CWYW Traveling Library

Number of Cite While You Write Plug-ins Export Traveling Library clicks (EndNote online).

Dashboard Downloaded

An instance in which a user downloads the .png file that accompanies the email notification that a dashboard has been shared. 

Dashboards Shared

When a user chooses to share a dashboard with another individual, and clicks on the Share button.

Dashboards Updated

Any action that triggers the dashboard to save recent changes the user has made. Annotating a tile, for example, will update the dashboard and save automatically. 

DCI

Abbreviation for Data Citation IndexSM.

DII

Abbreviation for Derwent Innovations IndexSM.

DOI's

DOI stands for Digital Object Identifier. The value given in the DOI's column in an Article Match Retrieval Usage Summary report is the number of DOI's returned by responses to requests for data from Article Match Retrieval Service.

ESI

Abbreviation for Essential Science IndicatorsSM.

ESI Records Viewed

The number of records that users retrieve based on the filter criteria implemented.

Exports

Number of Save, Email or Preview & Print operations under Export References in EndNote online.

FECYT CVN

Normalized curriculum vitae (CVN) established by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT).

Five-Year Trend Graph Links

Number of URLs to graphs depicting the Journal Impact Factor of a journal for a five-year period.

Full Record Links

Number of URLs to full bibliographic data in Web of Science Core Collection returned by Article Match Retrieval Service.

IC

Abbreviation for Index Chemicus.

Imports

Number of Import clicks under Import References in EndNote online. 

Inter-Product Link

An inter-product link takes the user from one Web of Science database to another. An inter-product link is recorded when a user clicks any of the following links and the records returned come from a different database:

  • Times Cited number
  • Cited References number
  • View Related Records
  • Title of cited reference (link to full record of cited item)

Items Matched

An item in Web of Science Core Collection is a record of a document such as a journal article, book chapter or proceedings paper. Items matched is the number of records returned in responses to AMR requests submitted during the specified time period.

Items Not Matched

An item in Web of Science Core Collection is a record of a document such as a journal article, book chapter or proceedings paper. Items not matched is the number of items requested for which no records were found.

JCR

Abbreviation for Journal Citation Reports®.

Journal Alert

An email notification that the table of contents of a new issue of specified journal has been added to Current Contents Connect®.

Journal TOC Link

Number of times users click the link Go to Journal Table of Contents from a journal record in Journal Citation Reports.

Korean Journal Database

Link-in

A link-in takes the user from EndNote, ProCite, or Reference Manager to the full record in Web of Science. A link-in also counts as a Record Viewed in the target database.

Logins

Number of logins (successful and unsuccessful) from the EndNote online login page, Cite While You Write plug-in prompt in MS Word, Internet Explorer and Mozilla browser plug-in prompt, and EndNote desktop using the Transfer References tool.

Maximum Actual Users

The highest number of users who are logged on at any point during a 24-hour period.

Note: You may find occasions when the number of maximum actual users exceeds the number of maximum contractual users. This anomaly can occur if, during a period of high use, a server goes into redirect and an overlap session is created on the second server.

Maximum Contractual Users

The maximum number of simultaneous logons permitted by the terms of a subscription. This number should be constant from day to day for the duration of a subscription agreement, unless the agreement is modified to increase or decrease the number of simultaneous logons.

New References

Number of new references added using the Internet Explorer and Mozilla plug-ins Capture button and New Reference clicks in EndNote online.

New Users

1) Users who registered for an EndNote online account through myendnoteweb.com or 2) Users who registered in Web of Science and saved references to EndNote online.

OECD

Abbreviation for Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

PRO

Abbreviation for profiling.

Query

A request that returns results from a database.

In Web of Science, a query is recorded when a user clicks Search. A query is also recorded when a set is created by an alert. A remote query is a query submitted to a Web of Science database from outside Web of Science. For example, a query submitted from EndNote to Web of Science is reported as remote query.

In InCites/Benchmarking & Analysis, a query is recorded when a user clicks Update Results.

In InCites/Journal Citation Reports and InCites/Essential Science Indicators, a query is recorded when a user generates a report after creating or updating a filter.

Note: Queries are renamed Searches in COUNTER reports.

Records Emailed

Number of records e-mailed when a user clicks Email.

Records Exported

Number of records exported to EndNote, ProCite, or Reference Manager when the user clicks the Export to Reference Software button.

Records Ordered

Number of records for which full-text source documents are requested when a user clicks the Order Full Text button from the Marked Records page in Web of Science.

Records Printed

Number of records that are displayed when a user clicks Format for Print in Web of Science.

Records Saved

Number of records that are saved to a file when a user clicks Save to File in Web of Science.

Record View

In Web of Science, a record view is the display of a full record. Records in a summary list of results are not counted.

A link-in from EndNote to a Web of Science record counts as a record viewed in Web of Science.

Related Records Links

Number of URLs to Related Records in Web of Science Core Collection returned by Article Match Retrieval Service.

Remote Query

Reports Exported

Number of times users click the Download icon in ESI to export results in PDF, CSV or XSL format. Exceptions to this include the Citation Trends download, which is available only as a PDF and the Documents list, which cannot be exported. 

Reports Printed

Number of times users print results from any page in ESI by clicking the print icon.

Result Click

A click originating from a set of search results.

Result Clicks

When a user clicks on a hyperlinked item in the results table.

RSS

RSS, which stands for Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary, is an XML-based technology that enables users to collect and monitor updated content from different web sites.

Saved Queries

Number of times ESI users saved search criteria as a report. 

Searches

In EndNote online, the number of library searches using the Quick Search tool or the CWYW Find Citation tool.

Session

A successful logon or connection to the Web of Science portal. A successful logon or connection to a Web of Science Core Collection database is a subsession.

Subsession

A successful logon or connection to a database accessed through Web of Science.

Tile

A tile consists of  . . . .

Tiles Deleted

Number of tiles deleted during the report period.

Tiles Deleted

When a user chooses to delete a tile from either their Dashboard or from a saved report. 

Tiles Saved

Number of tiles saved during the report period.

Tiles Saved

When a user creates a new tile and saves it to either their Dashboard or a report. Users can additionally "Save As" and edit exsiting tiles which they can save as a new tile. 

Time Range

A three-hour time period, based on a 24-hour clock following the Universal Time (UTC) standard.

Times Cited Counts

Number of Times Cited values returned by Article Match Retrieval Service. This is the number of discrete Times Cited values, not the Times Cited value itself. In other words, it is the number of records with a Times Cited value returned by the service.

TOCs Viewed

TOC stands for Table of Contents. TOCs Viewed is the number of tables of contents viewed in Current Contents Connect®. In addition, a TOCs Viewed is recorded when a user clicks a Table of Contents link from another product. This link is available only if Current Contents Connect is part of an Web of Science subscription.

Token ID

An encrypted identifier used as an alternative to the IP Address to uniquely identify a computer connected to the Internet.

Top Capture Sites

URL list of top sites where Capture was used with the EndNote online browser plug-in.

Total Calls

The number of individual requests for data submitted to Article Match Retrieval Service. One request can specify multiple items.

Total Items Requested

This is the sum of the numbers in the same row for these variables:

  • Records Viewed
  • Records Exported
  • Records Saved
  • Records Printed
  • Records Emailed
  • Records Ordered
  • TOCs Viewed
  • FECYT CVN

Total Items Requested (AMR)

Number of articles (including book chapters and conference proceedings) for which matching data are requested by requests to Links Article Match Retrieval Service.

Total Pages Served

Number of pages served from the EndNote online.

Total Queries

Total queries include queries executed in a Web of Science database and web services queries.

Total Subsessions

Total subsessions include subsessions established in Web of Science and Web Services subsessions

Total Use

Sum of the numbers in one column in a usage report table.

Turnaway

A turnaway is recorded when a user is denied access because the maximum number of simultaneous logons has been reached. This term has been replaced by Access Denied (definition 1).

Ulrich Linkout

Number of times users click the Go to Ulrich's link from a journal record in Journal Citation Reports.

Unique User Use

The number of activities performed by an individual user identified by email address. This number can indicate whether EndNote online usage in a day or month is widespread or limited to a small number of highly active users.

User Credentials

Three types of user credentials are supported by Web of Science Usage Reporting System:

  • IP address
  • Token ID
  • Username and password

UT's

UT is a unique record identifier in Web of Science Core Collection.  The value given in the UT's column in an Article Match Retrieval Usage Summary report is the number of DOI's returned by responses to requests for data from Article Match Retrieval Service.
